Juvenile Crimes & Juvenile Delinquency
Michigan Juvenile Law
The criminal justice system in Michigan has long professed to recognize the difference between the delinquency of children and the criminal conduct of adults. Many of the offenses for which children and young adults under the age of eighteen are charged are similar to adult crimes, ranging from traffic misdemeanors to violent felonies. When a juvenile is accused of a crime in Michigan the legal process is very different than in adult court. The juvenile crime is called an act of delinquency and requires juvenile court intervention to deal with the delinquency. The following types of behavior often subject juveniles to juvenile court jurisdiction in Michigan:
- Assault and battery
- Curfew violations
- Drug use, drug trafficking, and alcohol
- Gang-related activities
- Running away from home
- Sexual misconduct
- Theft, vandalism, and property crimes
- Traffic violations
- Truancy and skipping school
- Violent crimes
While juvenile courts originally were designed to foster the positive development of wayward youth in need of care and guidance, the juvenile court today is for all practical purposes a criminal court with little focus on rehabilitation or the needs of children.
